What is MLA?

MLA stands for Modern Language Association and it serves as a standard for formatting in the Humanities fields such as English, World Language, Literary Studies, Cultural Studies and History. By using MLA format, you can easily communicate your ideas to a global audience because it is a universal format. By knowing MLA format, you can easily understand published information. Most basically, MLA sets the publishing rules for everyone.

How do I see MLA formatting in my essay?
  • The header and heading
  • The title (not underline, italicized, bold or larger, fancy font)
  • Margins (1 inch)
  • Double-spaced text, size-12 font (no extra skipped lines between paragraphs)
  • Evidence is followed by parenthetical (in-text) citation
  • Essay is followed by a Works Cited Page
